US President Donald Trump raised his voice against allied countries that are part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) this Friday (20), calling them “cowards” for not supporting Washington in its objectives of preventing the ayatollahs’ regime from building a nuclear weapon.
At Truth Social, the White House leader argued that, without the US, NATO is just a paper tiger and argued that his country has already managed to “beat” the enemy side militarily.
“Without the US, NATO is a paper tiger! They didn’t want to get into the fight to stop a nuclear-capable Iran. Now that that fight is won militarily, with very little risk to them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but they don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz — a simple military maneuver that is the main reason for high oil prices. It’s so easy for them to do this, with so little risk. COWARDS, and we WILL REMEMBER!”, he stated in a post on the platform he owns.
For days, the American leader has been pressuring allied countries to enter the conflict in the Middle East. This week, the Republican criticized NATO, as well as Australia, Japan and South Korea, after they rejected his request to create an international coalition to guarantee navigation on the route through which around 20% of global maritime oil trade passes. They argued that it is not a war they want to be involved in.
This Thursday, five European countries that are members of NATO – the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands – and Japan released a joint statement condemning the Iranian attacks, while also saying they were ready to contribute to the release of flow in the Strait of Hormuz. However, countries did not indicate how they could help.
