An Iranian citizen was arrested on Thursday (19) after trying to enter a United Kingdom nuclear naval base in Scotland, according to information released by Scottish police and the British press. The man, identified as a 34-year-old citizen of Iran, was accompanied by a 31-year-old woman, whose nationality was not disclosed, when he approached the entrance to HM Naval Base Clyde, known as Faslane, but was prevented from accessing the location because he did not have authorized credentials.

According to police in Scotland, the two were detained shortly after attempting to enter on suspicion of behavior considered unusual in the vicinity of the military installation. In a statement, authorities reported that both will be detained while investigations continue.

The Faslane base is considered one of the most sensitive military installations in the United Kingdom. The site is home to Vanguard-class submarines equipped with Trident ballistic missiles, which form Britain’s main nuclear deterrent. The facility also hosts Astute-class attack submarines capable of launching long-range cruise missiles.

The UK Ministry of Defense confirmed that it is following the case and participating in the investigations. Authorities did not release further details about those involved nor did they say whether there was a direct link between the episode and espionage activities.
