Last year, General Motors and Hyundai teamed up to develop new cars, trucks, and vans, with the two auto giants planning to produce more than 800,000 vehicles annually. The first fruits of that labor are finally coming to fruition, with an electric van hitting the market sometime soon. Now we also have details surrounding the duo’s upcoming pickup truck.
According to a report from GM Authoritythe two companies are currently working on a new mid-size pickup for Central and South America. The truck will reportedly use the current Chevrolet Colorado platform as its base, with major upgrades to accommodate a few region-specific elements.

The pair will specifically use GM’s GMT 31XX platform, which debuted in the US in 2022 with the then-new Colorado. The current Chevy S10 pickup, which remains on sale in markets like Brazil, never received the updated chassis, instead sticking with the Colorado’s previous platform.
GM and Hyundai will make major changes to the base, including an updated rear axle to accommodate a greater load capacity. The platform will also be reworked to accommodate diesel engines and single-cab body styles—two popular options in Central and South America.
The truck will be manufactured in South America at GM’s São José dos Campos plant in São Paulo, Brazil. The final version will include a brand-new Chevy S10 and Hyundai’s first mid-size pickup. Both trucks are scheduled to arrive sometime in 2028.
Unfortunately, we shouldn’t expect either of them to make it to the US. The S10 will remain a Central and South American-exclusive truck, while Hyundai’s version will undoubtedly do the same. That said, Hyundai has promised a new ‘mind-blowing’ body-on-frame pickup that could make it to the US alongside a rugged SUV.

Motor1’s Take: Mid-size trucks are hugely popular in Central and South America, so GM and Hyundai teaming up for a new one is a no-brainer. Using the current Colorado’s base also makes a lot of sense, given that the platform is hugely capable.
