Police consider intentional poisoning unlikely in case of poisoning at a pizzeria in Paraíba

by Marcelo Moreira

At least 117 people were treated in two health units after a case of food poisoning registered in the city of Pombal, in the Sertão da Paraíba. The police are investigating the circumstances of the episode, but consider the hypothesis of intentional poisoning unlikely.

According to authorities, one of the lines of investigation points to the consumption of sun-dried meat pizzas in cream, which may have caused poisoning in more than 100 people. This Wednesday (18), the owner of the establishment was interviewed and stated that he did not know what could have caused the problem.

Among the victims is Rayssa Bezerra e Silva, 44 years old, who consumed the food on site and presented symptoms compatible with food poisoning. She was attended to, but did not resist. The body was buried on Wednesday. Now, investigators are investigating whether there was contamination of the food — including considering the recent pest control of the establishment —, although the hypothesis of deliberate poisoning has been ruled out.
