In recent days, United States authorities have detected unidentified drones flying over a military base in Washington where two members of President Donald Trump’s government reside, according to The Washington Post newspaper reported this Wednesday (18), citing sources with direct knowledge of the case. The episode takes place in the midst of the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
According to the publication, the drones were seen over Fort McNair, a US Army installation located in the American capital where Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, live. Sources interviewed by the newspaper stated that several drones were detected in a single night, and that authorities were unable to determine the origin of the equipment.
According to the Washington Post, the episode led government members to discuss the possibility of temporarily transferring Rubio and Hegseth to another residence in another location, for security reasons, but the move was not carried out. A Trump administration official, interviewed on condition of anonymity, confirmed to the newspaper that the incident happened in the last few days.
The Pentagon and the State Department have not commented on the case. A Defense Department spokesperson told Washington Post that it cannot discuss movements of authorities for security reasons and classified it as “irresponsible” to disclose details of this type of information.
The newspaper cites that, after this incident, the State Department ordered all American diplomatic representations abroad to immediately review their security protocols, citing the possibility of more global repercussions from the war in the Middle East.
