Pakistan and Afghanistan announced a temporary truce after weeks of clashes that began in early February. The ceasefire comes into effect from this Thursday (19) and continues until midnight on Monday (23), local time, during Eid al-Fitr, the celebration that ends the holy month of Islam, Ramadan.
The decision was taken at the request of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, and was announced by Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid confirmed the agreement on the social network “X”.
The ceasefire comes after a recent intensification of violence between the two countries. On Monday (16), Afghanistan accused Pakistan of bombing a hospital for drug addicts in Kabul. According to local authorities, the attack left at least 400 dead and around 250 injured.
Pakistan, in turn, denied having hit civilian targets. In a statement, the Ministry of Information stated that the offensives “targeted military installations and structures supporting terrorism” and were carried out in order to minimize collateral damage.
