Polish Air Force fighters were called in to intercept a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, in a new episode that highlights the constant tension in European airspace.

The plane, a Il-20carried out a mission in an international area, but operated without a flight plan and with the transponder turned off, which raised the authorities’ alert level.

The action took place on March 13, 2026, when two MiG-29 Poles took off to visually identify the target and escort him out of the NATO-monitored area. Despite the approach, there was no violation of Polish airspace, and the operation was considered safe and successful by military authorities.
