The US Navy has chosen the military technology company Anduril Industries to participate in a program for the development of large autonomous submarines.
The initiative is part of CAMPproject, created by the US Department of Defense to accelerate the development of extra-large autonomous underwater vehicles, which can extend the range and capability of long-range underwater operations.
As part of the agreement, the company must carry out an extensive demonstration of the autonomous vehicle within four months of signing the contract Dive-XL. The aim of the test is to evaluate the system’s performance under conditions similar to real operations, by measuring factors such as autonomy, endurance and range in underwater missions.
The selection took place after a competitive process led by the Defense Innovation Unit. According to the company, its autonomous underwater vehicles have already completed more than 42,000 kilometers of operations and 6,700 hours of missions, data used to document the reliability and long-term operational capability of these platforms.
In addition to the new contract with the United States Navy, Anduril highlighted his previous experience from the Ghost Shark program in collaboration with the Royal Australian Navy. Production of the Dive-XL currently takes place in Sydney, Australia, while a facility in Quonset Point is being readied to produce dozens of these platforms and hundreds of smaller vessels annually.
