Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said on Friday (13) that the country has started talks with the United States, as the island faces one of its most serious economic crises in decades. He said he hoped the negotiations would move the two historic rivals “off the path of confrontation.” The country’s economic crisis has been worsened by disruptions in the supply of imported oil, which the island relies on to operate power plants and transport networks. Fuel shortages forced authorities to impose rotating blackouts across the country and limit some public services. In recent weeks, Trump has made a series of statements saying that Cuba is on the brink of collapse or eager to reach a deal with the United States.
