The Under Secretary of Public Diplomacy of the US State Department, Darren Beattie, has published in X a message warning that Donald Trump management is “closely following” the situation in Brazil after threatening a 50% rate on imports of Brazilian products from August.
“President Trump sent a letter imposing long -awaited consequences on the Supreme Court of [Alexandre de] Moraes and the Government [do presidente Luiz Inácio] Lula [da Silva] For their attacks on Jair Bolsonaro, US freedom of expression and trade, ”Beattie wrote on Monday (14).
“Such attacks are a shame and far short of the dignity of Brazil’s democratic traditions. President Trump’s statements are clear. We are closely following,” added the Undersecretary.
Beattie’s message concerns a letter sent by the US president Lula last week, in which he said he should impose 50% tariffs on imports in Brazil.
In the document, Trump claimed that former President Jair Bolsonaro is a victim of judicial persecution, that “secret and illegal” decisions of Moraes regarding American Big Techs have represented attacks on US citizens’ freedom of expression and that Brazil adopts unfair trade practices against the United States.
The Federal Supreme Court (STF) said it will not comment on the Beattie post. THE Gazeta do Povo He requested Itamaraty’s position on Lula’s criticism, but has not yet received an answer. This text will be updated if there is return.
