Moraes denies Trump advisor’s visit to Bolsonaro after listening to Mauro Vieira

by Marcelo Moreira

Federal Supreme Court (STF) minister Alexandre de Moraes changed his previous decision and denied, this Thursday (12), the visit of United States government State Department advisor Darren Beattie to former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Upon reconsideration, the minister accepted the arguments of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, who pointed to the justification presented in the visa application. In it, Beattie only mentioned his participation in the Brazil-USA Critical Minerals Forum, without mentioning the visit to the 19th Military Police Battalion of the Federal District.

With this, Moraes understood that the visit “is not part of the diplomatic context that authorized the granting of the visa and entry into Brazilian territory, in addition to not having been previously communicated to the Brazilian diplomatic authorities, which could even lead to the reanalysis of the granted visa”.

The minister also cites an excerpt from Vieira’s letter that speaks of the risk of “undue interference in internal matters” during the visit, especially due to the election year.

Moraes called Itamaraty after Bolsonaro’s defense requested a change in the already authorized date, so that it would fit into Beattie’s schedule. Given this, the minister wanted to know if there was any diplomatic agenda scheduled between the Brazilian government and the advisor.

There was a call for a meeting between Beattie and the head of the General Coordination of Transnational Illegals (Cocit), Marcelo Della Nina, but without official confirmation. The American should arrive in Brazil next Monday (16) and return to his country on Wednesday (18).

Despite the absence of mention on the visa, Itamaraty recognizes that the United States embassy in Brasília communicated about Beattie’s visit to Bolsonaro. For Moraes, however, verbal communication is not enough.
