PL that authorizes the sale of pepper spray used by police for women goes to the Senate

by Marcelo Moreira

The Chamber of Deputies approved, this Wednesday (11), a bill that regulates the sale and use of pepper spray and sprays based on plant extracts by women. The proposal now goes to the Senate for analysis. The objective is to expand self-defense tools and help prevent physical or sexual assaults.

The text was authored by deputy Gorete Pereira (MDB) and received a substitute from the rapporteur, Gisela Simona (União-MT). Under the proposal, women over 18 will be able to purchase and use the sprays. Teenagers aged 16 and over may also have access to the product, as long as they have express authorization from their legal guardian.

Before being sold, the products will need approval from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and cannot contain substances with lethal effects or permanent toxicity. The text also provides for penalties in case of non-compliance with the rules, such as a formal warning and the imposition of a fine.
