Trump says war on Iran is ‘almost over’

by Marcelo Moreira

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, did not rule out this Monday (9) the possibility of the US taking control of part of Iranian oil and stated that the ongoing war against the Islamic regime is “almost over”.

In conversation with the broadcaster NBC NewsTrump avoided directly stating that he intends to confiscate Iran’s oil, but left the possibility open.

“Certainly people talked about it [o controle do petróleo iraniano pelos EUA]”, said the president. He recalled that it would be “too early to talk about it”, but mentioned the precedent of Venezuela, where, according to him, the United States had already obtained more than 80 million barrels after the operation carried out in January, which culminated in the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro and the rise of Delcy Rodríguez as interim leader, who has been opening the energy market to US control.

The possible control by the US of part of Iranian oil production could put China in a difficult situation, which buys, at discounts, around 80% of the oil exported by Iran. The Persian country accounts for around 5% of global oil production.

Earlier, in an interview with CBS NewsTrump also stated that the conflict against the Islamic regime “is practically over”. The president justified his speech by stating that Iran had lost relevant military capabilities so far.

“They have no navy, they have no communications, they have no air force. Their missiles are scattered. Their drones are being destroyed,” Trump explained.

The president also warned Tehran not to attempt new military actions. “They have already fired everything they had to fire, and they better not try anything clever, or it will be the end of that country,” said the president.

The ongoing war between Iran, the USA and Israel began on February 28, following American and Israeli attacks against Islamic regime targets on Iranian soil. The US and Israel’s stated aim of the war is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and neutralize threats to American security and that of allies in the Middle East.
