“People deserve the space to express themselves and I’m glad that people are looking to me as inspiration to do that,” she continued. “Success looks different on everybody and it can mean different things to people.”
As for personal identity, Alysa isn’t the only celebrity that’s teaching the world how to properly pronounce their name. Last month, Marvel star Simu Liu admitted that when it comes to his last name, “I go by ‘Lee-You, which is not that hard.”
Similar to the Olympic athlete, he noted that the various enunciations often depend on making it simpler for others to remember.
“I feel like a lot of Liu’s grew up in non-Asian environments, and they went by ‘Loo’ for simplicity sake because that’s even easier to say and it’s better than nothing, right?” he explained in his Instagram post at the time, before playfully calling out people’s approach to his first name, “you should definitely get that right, you b—hes.”
