China’s communist regime sent one of its special representatives to the Middle East in an attempt to present itself as a mediator in the escalating conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran. The announcement was made this Wednesday (4) by the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, during a telephone conversation with the Chancellor of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Faisal bin Farhan.
According to a statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang stated that Beijing does not wish to see the expansion of the war in the region and defended the resumption of negotiations between the parties involved.
“China strongly urges all parties to cease military operations, resume dialogue and negotiation as soon as possible and avoid further escalation of tensions,” said the minister.
According to the statement, the head of Chinese diplomacy also classified the use of force during the conflict as “unacceptable”, “especially when there is a risk to civilians or targets that are not military in nature”. According to the Chinese regime, Beijing considers it essential to “avoid attacks against civilians or non-military infrastructure”.
Wang also praised Saudi Arabia’s role in trying to reduce tensions in the region. The communist chancellor stated that China appreciates “Saudi Arabia’s moderation and commitment to the peaceful resolution of differences” and highlighted that reconciliation efforts between Middle Eastern countries must be preserved. The statements make indirect reference to the resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, a process mediated by Beijing and announced in 2023. Xi’s dictatorship considers this agreement one of its main recent diplomatic initiatives in the Middle East.
In addition to the dialogue with Saudi Arabia, Wang Yi also spoke this Wednesday with the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Abdullah bin Zayed. According to the official statement, the Chinese foreign minister highlighted that the protection of civilians must be treated as a “red line” in the conflict and stated that attacks against energy, economic or subsistence infrastructure must not occur.
