President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) made an appeal this Wednesday (4) to world leaders to seek the path of peace in the face of the war in the Middle East, and to prioritize the fight against hunger instead of increasing spending on armaments. The declaration was given at the Regional Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for Latin America and the Caribbean, in Brasília. Lula stated that the approximately US$2 trillion spent last year on conflicts could be divided among the 630 million people who suffered hunger in the world. “There wouldn’t be a need for hunger in the world if there was common sense among those in power,” he said. The president directly charged the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and criticized what he classified as “excessive focus on military strengthening.” See the videos that are trending on g1 According to him, resources destined for weapons, drones and combat planes do not produce food and end up worsening conflicts. Lula directly criticized the actions of the United Nations (UN), stating that the entity has lost credibility for not complying with the principles established in its founding charter. According to the president, the UN is “giving in to fatalism” and giving more space to interests linked to wars than to initiatives in defense of peace and the fight against hunger. For Lula, so far the UN has not called on countries to seek a solution in the Middle East. Lula also defended that Latin America maintains its position as a zone of peace. According to him, the region needs to act with sovereignty and not accept the persistence of historical inequality. “Peace is the only possibility to move humanity forward,” he stated.
