Belgium has begun talks with the United States to strengthen its air capabilities, which could include the possible purchase of CH-53K King Stallion and MH-60R Seahawk helicopters.
The discussions involve US manufacturers and defense authorities and could significantly increase the operational capabilities of the Belgian armed forces.
It was announced at the International Military Helicopter (IMH26) conference that it is MH-60R Seahawk offered as a direct successor to the current NH90 fleet. The type can perform strategic search and rescue tasks as well as maritime patrol, strengthening Belgium’s presence and surveillance in coastal areas and shipping lanes.
A CH-53K King Stallionconsidered to be the most powerful transport helicopter currently in service in the West, would meet heavy mobility requirements. The model is capable of carrying large external loads, as well as rapid redeployment of artillery and military equipment in European territory.
In addition to the helicopters, the Belgian government is also investigating the expansion of its fighter fleet, with the possibility of acquiring 11 more F-35A Lightning IIs, which would complement the 34 aircraft already ordered. The move reinforces the country’s strategy to modernize its armed forces and increase its response capabilities.

.@NAVAIRNews and @LockheedMartin–@Sikorsky tell me at @DefenceIQ #IMH26 that initial conversations are ongoing with #Belgium for both #CH53K and #MH60R helicopters. Both national requirements, while the CH-53K could help serve a wider @NATO need to airlift heavy artillery etc… pic.twitter.com/d92uXDQmEv
