A new law in the state of Kansas (USA) is forcing trans people to return their driver’s licenses if the documents do not reflect their assigned gender at birth.

More than 1,000 transgender drivers in Kansas will be affected by the new rule. To continue driving, they will have to pay to have new driver’s licenses issued to reflect their assigned gender at birth, according to the news agency. Reuters.

Drivers were notified via letter that the new law would come into force on February 26th. According to the letter, there is no grace period to update documents, which means that anyone who drives a vehicle with a license indicating a gender different from that assigned at birth may be penalized.

In Kansas, driving without a valid driver’s license is a class B misdemeanor and can result in a $1,000 fine and a prison sentence of up to six months, according to the website Unilad.

This new legislation is in line with a Kansas law passed in 2023 that establishes that trans people can only use bathrooms of their gender assigned at birth within the state’s jails.

Under this same law, trans people are also required to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of their gender assigned at birth in government buildings. These people can be reported if they fail to comply with the rules.

Violators will receive a warning for their first offense, but if repeated, they can pay up to a $1,000 fine and face up to six months in prison.
