Lula summons Alckmin to hit the last details of the retaliation decree to the tariff

by Marcelo Moreira

Vice-President and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, said he was summoned by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) for a meeting in Brasilia (DF) later this Sunday (13). The meeting will discuss the adjustments of the 50% rate retaliation decree on Brazilian products announced by US President Donald Trump last Wednesday (09).

In an event held in Francisco Morato, Greater São Paulo, on Sunday morning (13), Alckmin stated that the decree of regulation of the reciprocity law, approved by the National Congress, should be published by Tuesday (15).

The text will include response to the tariffs imposed on Brazilian steel and aluminum, which may include “other addenda”, and will establish the direct application of new rates. Details of the retaliation for the so -called “fare” are being agreed confidentially to avoid early reactions of possibly affected companies or countries.

“We will work to reverse this because it makes no sense. This measure even harms the US consumer,” said the vice president.

In speech, Alckmin stressed that the United States maintains a commercial surplus with Brazil, “both goods and services.” In addition, the minister has resumed that eight of the top ten products exported by the US to Brazil are exempt from taxes.
