Tesla has abandoned the “Autopilot” designation for its semi-autonomous driving system after the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) threatened to revoke the company’s licenses.

Although the system was called “Autopilot” by Teslait is important to emphasize that Full Self-Drivingsystem (FSD) is not fully autonomous and requires constant supervision from the driver.

Despite previous statements suggesting the vehicle could operate fully autonomously with FSD, even the most advanced system from Tesla classified as level 2 autonomy. To be considered capable of driving without human supervision, the company had to document Level 3 autonomy.

The California DMV decided last December that it was misleading to call Teslas semi-autonomous driving system for “Autopilot”. The authority therefore threatened to suspend the company’s dealer license in the state if the designation was not removed from communications and marketing campaigns.

In a statement issued Tuesday (17), the California DMV announced that “Tesla has successfully taken the necessary steps to stop the use of the term ‘Autopilot’ in the marketing of its vehicles in California, as required by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) last December”.

Going forward will Tesla refer to its systems under new names, also outside of California. Full Self-Driving will be called “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)”, and Autopilot will be renamed to “Traffic Aware Cruise Control.” The changes already appear to be implemented on Teslas website.
