Munich – The BMW Group has announced the expansion of its industrial digitalization strategy with the introduction of so-called “Physical AI” in its European plants.

The first pilot project on the continent is being implemented at the automobile manufacturer’s factory in Leipzig and focuses on the integration of humanoid robots into the series production of vehicles.

The initiative combines digital artificial intelligence with physical machines and robots so that intelligent systems can operate directly in the production environment. According to the company, the technology expands automation possibilities and opens up new perspectives for more flexible and adaptable production processes.

According to Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG and responsible for production, digitalization is a strategic factor for ensuring global competitiveness.

“Digitalization improves the competitiveness of our production – here in Europe and worldwide. The symbiosis of engineering expertise and artificial intelligence opens up completely new possibilities in production,” explained the manager.

Tests in series production

At the Leipzig plant, the pilot project will evaluate the integration of humanoid robotics into existing assembly lines. The manufacturer also plans to examine applications of physical AI in battery and component production – areas that are considered strategic in the wake of the electrification of the automotive industry.

The aim is to investigate how humanoid robots can work collaboratively with human employees, take on repetitive or physically demanding tasks and at the same time increase operational efficiency.

Previous experience in the USA

The decision to bring the technology to Europe follows the successful completion of a pilot project at the group’s Spartanburg plant in the United States. The North American factory was the first to test humanoid robots in a real automotive production environment.

According to the information, the knowledge gained in Spartanburg will be used to optimize and scale the applications of physical AI in other plants of the group.

Own competence center

To accelerate the global integration of artificial intelligence and robotics, the BMW Group has set up a new “Competence Center for Physical AI in Production”. This unit will coordinate technological development, standardize processes and drive international implementation of the technology.

With the project in Leipzig, the automobile manufacturer underlines its commitment to advanced digitalization as a strategic pillar of automobile production and combines traditional engineering with artificial intelligence in a new model of industrial production.
