Reports and videos released on social media this Saturday (28) show Iranians celebrating in cities in the United States and Canada after American President Donald Trump stated that Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in attacks coordinated by Washington and Israel.
The images show people in the streets with Iranian flags and messages celebrating what they call the “dawn of a free Iran”. Publications claim that part of the “Iranian diaspora” sees the possible death of the ayatollah as an “opportunity for political change” in the country.
Witnesses interviewed by international agencies reported similar demonstrations within Iran itself. According to these reports, there were celebrations in Tehran, in the neighboring city of Karaj and in Isfahan. Videos published on social media also show honking horns and concentrations of people in places such as Shiraz and Abdanan.
In some recordings, photos of protesters killed in the repression of anti-government protests in January appear, in reference to recent waves of demonstrations harshly repressed by the regime.
In Brazil, federal deputy Kim Kataguiri (União-SP) published that “the Iranian people took to the streets to celebrate the death of dictator Khamenei” and classified the Ayatollah’s regime as one of the most oppressive in the world.
Trump confirmed Iranian leader’s death
United States President Donald Trump confirmed the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, following attacks carried out in conjunction with Israel against Iranian territory.
In a statement released on social media, Trump stated that Khamenei “is dead” and classified the ayatollah as “one of the most evil people in history”. According to the American president, the operation was the result of “highly sophisticated” intelligence and tracking systems, conducted in cooperation with Israel.
Trump declared that Khamenei’s death represents “the greatest opportunity” for the Iranian people to regain control of the country. He stated that members of the Revolutionary Guard, military and security forces would be seeking immunity from the United States.
Iranian state media reported that, in the joint attacks by the United States and Israel, close members of the family of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei — including his daughter, a grandson, daughter-in-law and son-in-law — were killed, according to official Iranian media outlets.
