STF unanimously decides to condemn the Brazão brothers as those responsible for the murders of Marielle and Anderson Gomes

by Marcelo Moreira

The First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court decided, unanimously, to convict the brothers Chiquinho Brazão and Domingos Brazão for planning and ordering the murder of councilwoman Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes, in March 2018, in Rio de Janeiro.

The members of the Panel voted in favor: minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case, Cristiano Zanin, Cármen Lúcia and Flávio Dino. At the end of the trial, the ministers will define the sentences for those convicted.

The only disagreement was in relation to former Civil Police delegate Rivaldo Barbosa. He was acquitted of the crime of qualified homicide due to “reasonable doubt”, but ended up being convicted of passive corruption and obstruction of justice, for having received money from the militia to hinder the investigations.
