The United States Department of State’s Office of Counterterrorism praised this Monday (23), in a publication on the social network X, the operation that culminated in the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”, leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG). According to information, the US participated in the action by providing intelligence data to Mexican authorities.
In the message, the Office of Counterterrorism said that “the United States commends Mexico for the successful operation that resulted in the elimination of Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the foreign terrorist organization designated the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), thus ending his reign of terror.” The text also highlighted that Washington “honors the bravery and sacrifice of the Mexican military and security agents in this fight” and praised the “decisive execution” of the operation.
“El Mencho” died this Sunday (22) after being seriously injured during a clash with security forces in the municipality of Tapalpa, in the state of Jalisco. According to Mexico’s National Defense Secretariat, he was shot while trying to escape and died while being transferred by plane to Mexico City, where he would receive medical care.
The CJNG was designated a foreign terrorist organization by President Donald Trump’s administration in February of last year. According to the US Drug Control Administration (DEA), the cartel maintains operations in a large part of the American territory. The U.S. State Department offered a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to the capture or conviction of “El Mencho.”
