Trump threatens to raise tariffs against countries that “play” with Supreme Court decision

by Marcelo Moreira

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, warned that any country that “plays” with the American Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the tariff could face “much higher” rates.

Trump wrote on his social network that especially countries that, according to him, “exploited” the United States for years, could face worse tariffs, and warned them to be “careful”. In another publication, he said that he “does not need to go back to Congress to obtain approval” of new tariffs, contradicting the Supreme Court decision. Trump called the resolution ridiculous and poorly crafted.

Last week, the American court ruled that the tariffs imposed by Trump last year, based on a national emergency law, were illegal, and that the president would need to have “clear authorization from Congress” to justify imposing the tariff. Less than 24 hours later, the US president announced a new global tariff on imports of 10%, which later rose to 15%. The measure should come into force this Tuesday (24).
