Australia supports removal of former Prince Andrew from the line of succession to the throne

by Marcelo Moreira

The Australian government has declared that it is in favor of removing former Prince Andrew from the line of succession of the British Royal Family. The Australian Prime Minister defended this position in a letter sent to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Anthony Albanese is the first leader of a Commonwealth country linked to the United Kingdom to speak out in this way. Andrew is the younger brother of King Charles III and had his royal titles stripped after being the subject of sexual assault allegations. Despite this, he still has chances, albeit remote, of becoming monarch, as he occupies eighth position in the line of succession.

The British government is considering asking Parliament to pass a law that would eliminate this right. The former prince was detained last week on suspicion of having passed on confidential trade documents to an American billionaire. After eleven hours in prison, Andrew was released last Thursday night (19). He is also accused of being part of a sex trafficking network and abusing a minor.
