United States President Donald Trump announced this afternoon that he will raise global import tariffs to 15%, in a post on his social network Truth Social. According to the president, the measure aims to correct “decades of unfair trade practices” that, in Trump’s assessment, harmed the American economy. In the statement, Trump states that, after “a complete and detailed analysis” of a recent decision by the US Supreme Court contrary to part of his tariff policy, he decided to immediately raise the global tariff from 10% to 15%. In the message published around 1 pm, the president said that the increase is legal and permitted by existing legal instruments, and that in the coming weeks the Trump administration will define “the new legal and permissible tariffs” that will be applied globally. He also reinforced that the measure is part of the strategy to continue the process of “Making America Great Again — GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!” (making America great again — even bigger than before). “…as President of the United States of America, I will be, with immediate effect, raising the 10% global tariff on countries (…) to the legally permitted level of 15%.” The announcement represents an escalation in trade tensions between the US and its main economic partners, and could affect international trade flows, supply chains and diplomatic relations in several regions.
