This Friday (20), Minister Alexandre de Moraes responded to a request from the government of Rio de Janeiro and decided to extend the deadline for sending the images and cameras used in Operation Containment. The action was carried out in October last year in the Alemão and Penha complexes, resulting in more than 120 deaths.
Amid this new decision, the State will have 20 days to disclose all material captured in the operation. The deadline would end next week.
Furthermore, Moraes ordered the National Council of the Public Ministry to present, within five days, updated information on the analysis of the Strategic Plan for Territorial Reoccupation.
The minister also ordered the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro to send, within the same five-day period, a report detailing the agency’s actions in all stages of the operation.
Operation Containment
The mega-operation carried out in the Alemão and Penha complexes, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, became one of the most lethal police actions in the state’s recent history. The offensive mobilized a large number of security forces and had air and ground support.
The action left more than 120 people dead. Residents reported intense clashes, interruption of services and restrictions on movement during the period of the operation. Schools and health units were affected, and several roads were blocked.
The state government stated that the operation aimed to dismantle armed criminal groups operating in the region and regain territorial control in areas dominated by factions. The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claúdio Castro, said that the operation was necessary to combat organized crime and reduce violence rates.
