The United States Supreme Court may decide this Friday (20) on the legality of Donald Trump’s tariffs on several countries, including Brazil.
The authorities’ deliberation must define the limits of the Republican’s power to impose import tariffs without the approval of Congress. The analysis of Trump’s taxes involves an appeal by the Justice Department against a lower court ruling that said the Republican exceeded his authority by imposing most of the global taxes based on a federal law assigned to emergency situations.
The legal process has been ongoing since mid-2025 and involves the 10% reciprocal tariffs that Trump imposed on countries. However, the Court may also take into account Trump’s decision – if it occurs – to tax countries that trade with Iran by 25% due to the Iranian government’s repression of anti-government protesters.
