President Lula criticized big tech during his speech at the opening of the Artificial Intelligence summit in New Delhi, India. The president stated that the business model “of these companies depends on the exploitation of personal data”.
Lula also once again defended the regulation of AI and highlighted that they “can encourage extremely harmful practices” of technology, such as hate speech, misinformation, child pornography, feminicide, violence against women and girls, in addition to precarious work.
In his speech, the PT member pointed out that false content generated by artificial intelligence harms electoral processes and also puts democracy at risk.
Lula concludes that forums around the world to deal with the topic have been created, such as the Chinese initiative to create an International Organization for Cooperation in Artificial Intelligence with a focus on developing countries and the dialogue with the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence that was born at the G7 Summit, but highlighted the importance of the United Nations (UN) in this scenario.
None of these forums replaces the universality of the United Nations for an international governance of Artificial Intelligence that is multilateral, inclusive and development-oriented, concluded Lula in a speech in India.
