The measure was adopted after the military operation that overthrew the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. Last week, a senior Russian diplomat said Moscow would provide help to Cuba to counter the United States’ attempt to block oil supplies to the country. “Now is a special period, new sanctions. You know what we think about this,” Putin told Rodríguez, according to the TASS agency. “We don’t accept any of that.” Putin also stated that relations between Russia and Cuba are advancing “on a positive trajectory”. In a separate meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told his Cuban counterpart that Russia will ask the United States not to impose a complete naval blockade on the island. Russia, Ukraine and the United States concluded a round of trilateral peace negotiations earlier in Geneva. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the Cuba issue was not discussed with the US government.
