This Tuesday (17), Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that “good progress” had been made in the negotiations in Geneva. According to Araghchi, both sides agreed on a “set of guiding principles.” He was optimistic, but did not give many details of what was discussed or when the next round of discussions could be held.
On the North American side, Vice President JD Vance also stated that progress had been made and that the Iranians had agreed to meet again. He cited some “red lines” that the Iranians would be unwilling to recognize and negotiate. The main one would be the acquisition of nuclear weapons, a factor that, according to Vance, would be a risk for the world. He also highlighted that President Donald Trump reserves the use of force if negotiations fail. The price of oil rose 3% this Wednesday (18) amid the vice president’s statements.
Although negotiators mention diplomatic advances, the military scenario still indicates tensions. The region is experiencing an environment of reciprocal threats and increased troop mobilization. Also on Tuesday, Iran carried out large-scale military maneuvers in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic area for global oil transport.
