US President Donald Trump announced the opening of Japan’s investments on American soil as part of the trade agreement signed in July last year. In total, the partnership foresees commitments valued at US$550 billion with initial projects in the energy, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and critical minerals sectors.
The Republican leader’s announcement was made at Truth Social on Tuesday. Trump highlighted that the first set of investments under the “historic commitment” will revitalize the US industrial base, create hundreds of thousands of jobs and strengthen national and economic security “like never before.”
He cited his government’s tariff policy as fundamental to reaching the bilateral agreement. “The scale of these projects is so large and could not be carried out without a very special word, tariffs”, described the president.
The president detailed that the projects include a gas-fired thermoelectric plant in Ohio, activities linked to oil and gas in Texas and exploration of critical minerals in Georgia.
In July 2025, Trump announced this trade agreement with Japan, which included this million-dollar investment, as well as the reduction from 24% to 15% of reciprocal tariffs on Japanese products.
Furthermore, the established pact provided for expanded access for American products in the Japanese market, prioritizing vehicles and agricultural products.
Japan Parliament confirms Trump ally as prime minister
This Wednesday (18), Japan’s Parliament revalidated the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (PLD), Sanae Takaichi, as the country’s prime minister, after obtaining a landslide victory of two-thirds of the Lower House in the recent early elections.
Following the parliamentary vote, Takaichi’s new cabinet is expected to be sworn in within the next few hours. The president stated, after winning the elections, that she would not make profound changes to her Executive.
The conservative leader received support from Trump for the February 8 legislative elections. She defends similar agendas to the Republican government in relation to economic policy, national security and migration. Therefore, it has become an ally of Washington in Asia, amid US friction with China since Trump’s return to the White House.
