Peruvian Congress dismisses President Josรฉ Jerรญ

by Marcelo Moreira

The Peruvian Congress decided this Tuesday (17) to remove President Josรฉ Jeri from office, who had assumed the Presidency just four months ago. The measure was approved following the repercussion of a scandal involving undeclared meetings with a Chinese businessman.

The dismissal occurred through a simple majority vote, a mechanism that is easier to approve than impeachment โ€” a procedure that requires at least 87 votes from the 130 parliamentarians. The decision reinforces the recent history of political instability in the country, which, despite this, continues to be seen as one of the most solid economies in the region.

Before the session, Jeri and allies maintained that the case should be analyzed in a formal impeachment process. He had already stated, however, that he would accept Congress’ verdict.

With his departure, his replacement takes over as the eighth Peruvian president in eight years, while Jeri becomes the third consecutive president removed from power by the Legislature.
