Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves told reporters that three other victims are hospitalized in critical condition. “It appears to have been a targeted event, possibly related to a family dispute,” Goncalves said. She did not provide details about the suspect or the ages of those killed, but said the two victims appeared to be adults. The shooting took place at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, just a few miles from Providence. Outside the arena, family members cried, and high school hockey players, still in uniform, hugged each other before boarding a bus to leave the area. The surrounding streets were closed, while a heavy police presence remained at the scene and helicopters flew over the area. Pawtucket is north of Providence, near the Massachusetts state line. With just under 80,000 inhabitants, the city was known, until recently, for housing Hasbro’s headquarters.
