USS Gerald R. Fordthe planet’s most powerful warship, is being moved from the Caribbean to the Middle East in a move by the United States amid rising tensions with Iran.

Move Ford will strengthen the already significant US naval presence in the region. Aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln currently operating in the area along with three guided missile destroyers.

According to the server UK Defence Journal the decision will place “two aircraft carriers and their accompanying warships in the region,” increasing the military weight of the United States at a time when regional governments are warning of the risk of escalation.

One of the sources also described the move as an attempt by the American president Donald Trump put further pressure on Iran to conclude a “deal on its nuclear program”.

Ford was recently deployed to the Caribbean and was reportedly involved in a US operation to detain the Venezuelan president Nicoláse Madura.

With two U.S. aircraft carriers now operating in or near the Arabian Sea, the United States will be ready to conduct sustained air operations, maritime security missions, and deterrence patrols throughout the region if necessary.
