Military personnel from Robbins Air Force Base in the state of Georgia are at the forefront of a strategic effort to deal with a growing threat to aviation: laser attacks against aircraft.
The project, led by the United States Air Force, includes the modernization of the eye protection systems used by air crews, following a sharp increase in the number of incidents in recent years.

To reduce the risk, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center Through the Human Systems Division at the Wright-Patterson base, implements a comprehensive upgrade of eye protection equipment as part of the Technology Insertion program, which is reevaluated every five to seven years.
The new Block 3 family, developed in collaboration with teams from the Robbins base, includes six modular components, including:
- Protective glasses for daily use
- Goggles for night use
- ballistic equipment
- Shields compatible with night vision goggles
The technological advantage of Block 3 lies in the use of a new optical color, capable of blocking a wider range of harmful laser wavelengths, while allowing more passage of natural light. The result is improved visual acuity without compromising the level of protection.
A target of 45 thousand units by 2029
The Air Force plans to distribute more than 45,000 systems by 2029. The initiative is designed to protect both crew members and aircraft in an environment where laser attacks continue to increase.
Experts point out that although many of the incidents originate from civilians and are considered federal offenses, the operational impact is significant – and may lead to detours, delays and even the cancellation of missions.
