The Argentine Chamber of Deputies approved the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. There were 203 votes in favor and only 42 against.
Now, the text goes to the Senate, which is expected to debate the proposal on the 26th. If approved, Argentina will become the first Mercosur country to fully ratify the treaty in Congress.
Argentines seek to gain an advantage over Brazil within the agreement, therefore, accessing export quotas for agricultural products first would mean a competitive advantage over Brazil. In Brasília, the Chamber of Deputies should only begin debating ratification on February 24th.
Although the European Parliament has sent the treaty to be analyzed by the Court of Justice of the European Union, the agreement can still be applied provisionally by the European Commission.
