PF arrests Russian included on Interpol’s red list

by Marcelo Moreira

The Federal Police (PF) arrested, this Thursday (12), a fugitive from justice in Russia. Accused of fraud, he was included on the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) Red List. The Federal Supreme Court (STF) had already ordered his extradition. The name and case were not revealed by the PF. The action took place in cooperation between the PF Superintendency in São Paulo and the Interpol office in São Paulo.

The red alert is based on an arrest warrant issued by authorities in one of Interpol’s 196 member countries. In the system, police officers can view data to identify the wanted person (name, date of birth, nationality, hair and eye color, photographs and fingerprints) and information about the crime for which they are accused.

Currently, the STF systems record three extradition processes requested by the Russian government, distributed to three different rapporteurs: Cristiano Zanin, Alexandre de Moraes and Dias Toffoli.

The Anjos da Liberdade Institute, chaired by Flávia Fróes, lawyer for members of Comando Vermelho, tried to enter the case reported by Moraes, to debate the risk of human rights violations in the country presided over by Vladimir Putin. Moraes, however, denied participation: “The admission of a third party to reiterate defensive arguments would not add new elements to the debate, serving only to provide argumentative reinforcement to the defense, distorting the purpose of the institute.”

Brazil has been a member of Interpol since its foundation in 1923. In November 2024, Brazilian delegate Valdecy Urquiza was appointed secretary general of the organization.
