This Wednesday (11), US President Donald Trump stated that the meeting held with the President of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, was productive. The reason for the meeting was to discuss the possibility of an agreement with Iran.
According to Trump, the meeting did not result in definitive decisions, but reinforced his position that negotiations with Iran must continue to evaluate the possibility of a new agreement. He declared that, if an understanding is viable, this will be his government’s preference. Otherwise, he added, it will be necessary to wait for the next developments.
“Nothing definitive has been reached, other than my insistence that negotiations with Iran continue to see if an agreement can be reached. If it is possible, I have informed the Prime Minister that this will be our preference. Otherwise, we will have to await the outcome.” Trump said.
When mentioning the history of negotiations with Tehran, Trump stated that, on a previous occasion, Iran chose not to close a deal and ended up being the target of the so-called “Operation Midnight Hammer”, which, according to him, would not have been favorable to the Iranians. The former president said he hoped that, this time, the Iranian government would adopt a “more reasonable and responsible” stance.
Trump also said he discussed recent developments in Gaza and the Middle East region more broadly with Netanyahu. In his assessment, there is currently a scenario of “true peace” in the region.
Held in an unusual way and completely behind closed doors, the meeting between Trump and Netanyahu lasted approximately three hours.
