Dead: Audi S6

by Marcelo Moreira

  • Audi had discontinued the gas-powered S6 model.
  • Audi has no plans to replace it.
  • The new A6 comes standard with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6.

Another one bites the dust; Audi has killed the gas-powered S6 sedan. The performance-oriented model no longer has a clear place in the brand’s lineup, with the latest combustion A6 now offering a standard turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and an electric S6 E-Tron.

According to the report from EdmundsAudi of America has no plans to offer an S6 variant on the current gas A6. Engine1 has contacted Audi to confirm the report.

The outgoing S6 features Audi’s turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-liter V6 hybrid engine, making 444 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. The new A6 comes standard in the United States with a turbocharged 3.0-liter hybrid engine making 362 hp and 406 lb-ft.

Audi launched the performance-oriented S6 over 30 years ago as a model above the regular A6. Audi would produce the S6 in short bursts until 2006, when production became continuous—until now.

Audi will continue to offer the electric S6, and soon, a new version of the high-performance RS6 Avant.

Motor1’s Take: The death of the Audi S6 is not a surprise with the new A6 arriving at dealers. It was an awkward middle child, caught between the standard model and the high-performance RS variant.
