Ten people, including the shooter, died after a shooting attack at a high school in western Canada on Tuesday (10), in one of the deadliest episodes in the country’s recent history. The case occurred in the city of Tumbler Ridge, in the province of British Columbia.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, six victims were found dead inside the school. Two other people died in a residence linked to the case, and a third victim died on the way to the hospital. At least two people remain hospitalized in a serious or life-threatening condition, while up to 25 were treated for non-serious injuries. Authorities did not say how many of the victims were minors.
The suspect in the attack was also found dead inside the school, apparently the victim of a self-inflicted wound. Police said there was no evidence of others involved or an ongoing threat to public safety. In a first alert about an active shooter, the suspect was described as “a woman in a dress and brown hair”, information later confirmed by authorities.
British Columbia Premier David Eby lamented the episode. “It’s difficult to know what to say on a night like this. It’s the kind of thing that seems to happen in other places and not close to home,” he told reporters.
The attack reignites the debate about armed violence in Canada, where episodes of this magnitude are less frequent than in the neighboring United States. The profile of the suspect — described as a woman — also caught the attention of authorities, as the majority of mass attacks in North America are committed by men. Investigations into the motivation for the crime remain ongoing.
