At least ten people died and another 25 were injured, two seriously, after a shooter opened fire at a high school in western Canada, this Tuesday (10).
Authorities have avoided releasing details about the victims’ identities or ages at this time, but have not ruled out that students, minors, and faculty members were among the dead. The crime took place at Tumbler Ridge School, an institution with around 175 students from the 7th year of Elementary School II to the 3rd year of High School, located in British Columbia.
According to preliminary reports from security forces, six of the victims were located inside the school, while two other bodies were found in a residence. Another person died while being transported to a hospital.
The suspected perpetrator of the massacre was found dead inside the school with self-inflicted injuries. His identity was not revealed by the police and the motivation for the crime remains under investigation.
A few hours before the massacre, the police had issued an alert about the suspect, describing her as a “woman in a dress and brown hair”, but there are no details about the reason for this communication from the authorities.
Police agents continue to search houses and properties in the town, located about 1,150 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, to check that there are no more victims. The police ruled out the existence of other suspects.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police explained that, at around 1:20 pm (local time, 7:20 pm Brasília time), they began receiving calls about the shooting at the school in the small town, which has around 2,400 inhabitants.
“As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the threat. During the search, officers located several victims. A person believed to be the perpetrator of the shooting was also found dead,” the Mounted Police detailed in an official statement.
