A woman involved in a car accident had a miraculous recovery after a metal rod pierced her chest.
Nursing students Janina Akporavbare was driving her car on Highway 10 in San Bernardino, California (USA), when a pole cut through the underside of her vehicle and pierced her chest.
The incident took place on August 25, 2025. According to the KCBS channel, she said that she could not avoid the pole due to rush hour traffic. “I heard a cracking sound. I woke up and felt something dripping on me. I looked down, and it was my blood,” Akporavbare recalled.
Despite the desperate situation, Akporavbare, who had her brother in the backseat at the time of the accident, managed to drive to the emergency lane and call emergency services.
Firefighters from the Loma Linda Firefighters Association quickly arrived on the scene, but Akporavbare knew her chances were not good. “I remember thinking, ‘I’m dying now. This is it for me,'” she said KCBS.
As she was transported to the hospital in an ambulance with the stake still in her stomach, Akporavbare remembers asking one of the paramedics to swear with her “little finger” that she would survive.
Akporavbare arrived at the hospital in less than 10 minutes and after several surgeries she made a miraculous recovery. “The doctors later told us she had only a 1% chance of survival. She survived,” the association said.
She lost parts of her liver, kidney and intestines and missed a semester of college, but is grateful to be alive. In a letter she sent to the association’s paramedics last month, Akporavbare called them “angels.”
“My parents and friends believe in this too. You are wonderful people to know. I’m glad God sent you to me,” she wrote in the letter, which was shared by the association in a Facebook post.
“We feel deeply honored to have been a part of her story and are grateful beyond words for her strength and faith. Moments like these remind us that behind every call is a real human being,” the association responded in the caption of the post.
After her recovery, Akporavbare is determined to resume her studies and even more determined to help others by becoming a nurse. “I want to help people, just like the nurses [Loma Linda University Medical Center] helped me,” she said KCBS.
