A woman involved in a car accident made a miraculous recovery after a metal rod went through her chest.
Nursing student Janina Akporavbare was driving her car on Highway 10 in San Bernardino, California (USA) when a pole cut through the bottom of her vehicle and went through her chest.
The incident took place on August 25, 2025. According to KCBS the channel she told that she was unable to avoid the pole because of the rush hour traffic. “I could hear this crushing sound. I woke up and felt something dripping on me. I looked down and it was my blood,” recalls Akporavbare.
Despite the desperate situation, Akporavbare, who had his brother in the back seat at the time of the accident, managed to drive to the side of the road and call 911.
Firefighters from Loma Linda Firefighters Association quickly arrived at the scene, but Akporavbare knew her chances were not good. “I remember thinking, ‘I’m going to die now. This is the end of me,'” she added KCBS.
While being transported by ambulance to the hospital with the post still in her stomach, Akporavbare remembers asking one of the paramedics to “promise on her little finger” that she would survive.
Akporavbare arrived at the hospital in less than 10 minutes, and after several operations she had a miraculous recovery. “The doctors later told us she had a 1% chance of survival. She survived,” the association said.
She lost parts of her liver, kidneys and intestines and lost a semester of her studies, but is grateful to be alive. In a letter she sent to paramedics from the association last month, Akporavbare called them “angels.”
“My parents and friends believe this too. You are wonderful people to know. I am glad God sent you to me,” she wrote in the letter, which was shared by the association in a Facebook post.
“We are deeply honored to have been a part of her story, and we are more grateful than words can express for her strength and faith. Moments like this remind us that behind every call there is a real person,” the association responded in the caption.
After her recovery, Akporavbare is determined to continue her studies and is even more motivated to help others by becoming a nurse. “I want to help people, just like the nurses at [Loma Linda University Medical Center] helped me,” she added KCBS.
