Trump says he may send another aircraft carrier to Iran region

United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (10) that he is considering sending another aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East to pressure Iran, with whom Washington has resumed negotiations for a nuclear agreement.

In late January, the Pentagon had already sent the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln’s strike group, which includes guided-missile cruisers, anti-aircraft warships and anti-submarine destroyers and frigates, to the Indian Ocean.

“We have an armada on the way and another could go too,” Trump said this Tuesday, in statements published by the American website Axios and the Israeli broadcaster Channel 12.

“Either we will reach an agreement or we will have to do something very hard like last time,” said the American president, referring to the attack that the United States carried out in June last year against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

In 2018, Trump withdrew the United States from the nuclear agreement that had been signed in 2015 between Iran and six powers, so that the Iranian nuclear program would be restricted to peaceful purposes, and resumed sanctions on Tehran.

However, since returning to the White House in January last year, the Republican has been pressuring Iran to make another agreement.

Last Friday (6), representatives from the USA and Iran held negotiations in Oman and Trump’s expectation is that the second round of talks will take place next week.
