São Paulo sanctions law that authorizes burial of dogs and cats in family graves

by Marcelo Moreira

This Tuesday (10), the law authorizing dogs and cats to be buried in family graves throughout the state of São Paulo was sanctioned and came into force. The device recognizes the emotional bond between owners and pets.

Bill 56/2015 was approved by the Legislative Assembly (Alesp) in December 2025. According to the text, the matter was inspired by the case of a dog that lived for ten years in a cemetery in Taboão da Serra and, when it died, had an authorized burial with its owner.

According to the law, it is up to the funeral services in each municipality to establish rules for the burial of animals. The expenses will be the responsibility of the family that owns the tomb or grave.

In the case of private cemeteries, the legislation allows the definition of specific rules for the burial of dogs and cats, as long as current legal regulations are observed.
