The statements occurred during interviews with French newspapers, which were published this Tuesday (10). The information was released by the Reuters news agency. “The EU has little debt compared to the United States and China. At a time of rush for technological investments, not taking advantage of this debt capacity is a serious mistake”, declared Macron to several newspapers, including Le Monde. The French president also stated that Europe needs to simplify and deepen its internal market, as “plans to make Europe more sovereign are not progressing fast enough.” He also said Europe should not mistake a truce in tensions with Washington for lasting change, despite the apparent end to disputes over Greenland, trade and technology. “When there is a clear act of aggression, I think what we should do is not bow down or try to come to an agreement. I think we’ve been trying this strategy for months. It’s not working,” Macron said. Macron claimed the Trump administration was being “openly anti-European” and seeking the “dismemberment” of the EU. The French leader also believes the US could retaliate against EU countries, including France and Spain, that plan to ban children from using social media. The statements come before the meeting of European heads of state and government, scheduled for Thursday (12), in Brussels, to discuss competitiveness.
