Iran’s Islamic regime has left open the possibility of diluting its stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% if all sanctions imposed against the country are lifted.
According to the Iranian state agency IRNAthe head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Eslami, stated this Monday (9) that the dilution of the material “depends on all sanctions being lifted in exchange”, without clarifying, however, whether the condition refers only to American sanctions or also to international measures in force.
The international press cites that the proposal was mentioned in indirect negotiations held on Friday (9) between Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the United States special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, in Oman. According to the parties involved, there was an agreement to continue the dialogue, although Tehran recognized that the level of distrust between the sides “remains high”.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran possessed more than 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium before the war in June last year. After the conflict, when the country’s nuclear centers were hit by bombings from the United States and Israel, the fate of this material remained uncertain, as UN inspectors recorded its location for the last time just days before the attacks began.
IAEA officials assess that the attacks caused significant damage to Iran’s enrichment capacity, but say Tehran could resume the process within a few months. Currently, according to the UN body, Iran is the only country signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty that enriches uranium to 60%.
