The government of US President Donald Trump sued the state of California, claiming that three of its state laws have boosted the increase in egg price.
“California has contributed to the historical increase in the price of eggs by imposing unnecessary bureaucratic procedures in its production,” says the complaint, presented last Wednesday (9) at the California Central District District Court.
The lawsuit considers that “a combination of citizen initiatives, laws and regulations” of this state “has effectively prevented farmers from all over the country from using widespread agricultural production methods that helped maintain an affordable price.”
The complaint points out that the United States face “a historical crisis of the cost of living” and that “excessively costly and unnecessary regulations have diminished the power of purchase and prosperity” of workers.
Because of this, according to the document, Trump promised, starting his second term, that he would work to “eliminate the overwhelming regulatory load” which, in his opinion, caused a “shortage of necessary goods and services.”
Demand cites three standards: the one that regulates the quality of eggs for human consumption; AA that fixes minimum space requirements for chickens and other animals; and the one that created welfare patterns for these animals.
State Governor’s Office, Democrat Gavin Newsom, mocked the lawsuit.
“Trump returned to his favorite hobbies: to blame California for literally everything. The next: Gavin Newsom caused the fall of Rome and sent the asteroid that annihilated the dinosaurs,” said the governor’s office in X.
The price of eggs has received a lot of attention from the US president for months.
According to the Department of Labor Statistics, the price of eggs reached a first peak in January 2023, in the presidential term of Democrat Joe Biden (2021-2025), but it was in February this year, under Trump, that broke all records, reaching $ 5.89 a dozen in February, the highest value for this month since 1980.
